In ancient numerology, the number 7 was propitious, as was the number 14, so Matthew was really demonstrating that Jesus was destined for greatness.The remainder of the chapter tells us that Mary was pregnant with the child of the Holy Ghost and that Joseph was planning to put her away privily, but an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him of the future mission of Jesus. Mark's nativity is clearly quite incompatible with Luke and Spong believes Matthew was clearly writing Christian midrash.
