the geneology of Jesus

AnswerChapter 1 verses 1-16 are Matthew's version of the genealogy of Joseph, husband of Mary mother of Jesus. It differs from those of Luke and even the Old Testament. Verse 17 demonstrated that there were 14 generations: from Abraham to David; from David to Josiah; from Josiah to Jesus. To do this, he had to ignore 3 kings in the Old Testament and have David in the preceding (as 14) and following (as 1) groups, but not so Josiah. In ancient numerology, the number 7 was propitious, as was the number 14, so Matthew was really demonstrating that Jesus was destined for greatness.

The remainder of the chapter tells us that Mary was pregnant with the child of the Holy Ghost and that Joseph was planning to put her away privily, but an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him of the future mission of Jesus. Mark's nativity is clearly quite incompatible with Luke and Spong believes Matthew was clearly writing Christian midrash.
