Type K copper is a thicker version of tubing. It is thicker for its use underground whereas the standard of Type L copper cannot be used underground. It is safe for domestic water supply. It comes in a roll, or in 12ft lengths. In some areas it is also certified to be used for supplying natural gas or propane underground.

Most Plumbing code recognize 3 Weight or Schedules of copper pipe or tubing. This is in reference to the thickness of the wall of the pipe. Not the diameter.

The 3 weight or Schedules of copper pipe/tubing is M, L, & K.

M is the thinnest, and can be used above ground only. L is heavier than M and can be used about or below ground. K is the heaviest of them all, and can be used above ground or below ground.

L and K are the only ones which can be used underground. K is what the utilitty company uses. Since its the thickest it will last the longest.

The advantage of using L or K above ground is that it will last longer , and be leass susceptible to freeze breaking. (Although much better chorices if thats what your trying to prevenst. Like PEX)

What type of copper is typically run underground?

Type L or Type K copper pipe is typically used for underground applications.
