∙ 10y agoThe same as it is today. Many areas of peninsular Greece are mountainous, and the soil layer thin and poor, with rocky outcrops. Some areas were fertile, but on average arable land was limited, which is why Greek city-states had to regularly send surplus population to take land in other areas around the Mediterranean and establish new city-states.
