He designed the first electromechanical punchard tabulating and sorting equipment. This equipment was used in the 1890 census. After the census was complete he left and started his own punchcard data processing company, which eventually merged with two other companies to become CTR, renamed in 1924 to IBM.
He died long before digital computers were conceived.
Herman Hollerith did not actually win a contest, but he was one of the people that led to the development of the computer. Herman Hollerith is famous for inventing a punch card device. The punch card device was used in the 1896 Census in the United States.
