IIS (internet Information Services) is Microsoft's web server solution that works with Windows Server. It's popular in the Windows environment; however, it's open-source counter-part, Apache Web Server, still holds strong as the most adopted web server solution.

A web server is responsible for accepting user HTTP requests and turning them into content that is then delivered back to the user. HTTP, or hyper-text transfer protocal, is the standard protocal that all Web Browsers use at this point in time.
