This is mentioned in KJV version of The Bible in Genesis 28 v12 when Jacob dreamed at Bethel. The ladder in the dream reached from Earth to Heaven and is referred to in the NIV as a staircase. Jacob's vision saw angels passing up and down the ladder, and is seen as symbolic of a number of things including the interchange of communication between Heaven and Earth, the ministry of angels. The dream provided Jacob with reassurance that he was not alone in what would have been lonely circumstances for him as he fled his angry brother, Esau.
