In changing the way Americans viewed the First Lady and her activities. All succeeding First Ladies are expected to set some sort of fashion trend, carry out a project both within and outside the White House, and are compared to her and Dolley Madison in terms of how they are hostesses and mothers. Jackie Kennedy used her knowledge of French, Spanish and Italian to help her husband reach out to the Italian vote in his 1958 reelection to the United States Senate from Massachusetts, Hispanic voters his 1960 Presidential bid, his trips she accompanied with him to Latin America and France in 1961, and to the returning survivors of the Bay of Pigs fiasco. She headed a literacy program for underprivileged children, and established a children's library inside the White House, sharing her passion to help the education of young children through reading (she had two young children herself). She lead the first major renovation and restoration project of the White House that was not presided over by a sitting President or a contractor hired by a President. Much of the interior of the White House state rooms, how they are accessible to tours and the public, and the appearance of fine arts, gardening, and entertainment in the White House today can attribute their origins to the work that Mrs. Kennedy started in 1961.
