John McKinlay (1819-1872) was a famous Australian explorer.
He led the government-funded search party the Burke and Wills expedition (when 19 men decided to cross Australia, from north to south). He found their graves, and received £1000 and a gold watch for his troubles.
He is more famous for his exploration of the Northern Territory in Australia, after which he reported that the area was suitable for settlement. A monument to his memory stands in the town of Gawler, South Australia.
