(There is a National Monument to Cabrillo on San Diego Bay in San Diego, California) Juan Cabrillo, a Spanish conquistador, landed in Mexico in 1520 and joined in the conquests of Mexico and Guatemala. He assumed command of Alvarado's exploration of the west coast of North America on Alvarado's death, discovering San Diego Bay Sept. 28, 1542, then sailed on to Northwest Cape beyond San Francisco Bay (which he did not find). Returning to winter on San Miguel Island off the Santa Barbara coast he died there January 3, 1543.
