According to the translators of the King James Version in their Preface and Dedication of their work to the king... the "reason" for it; "what it was all about," was that "...there should be one more exact Translation of the Holy Scriptures into the English tongue..." that was more easily understood than any that had gone before.

"...there should be one more exact Translation of the holy Scriptures into the English tongue; your MAJESTIE did never desist, to urge and to excite those to whom it was commended, that the worke might be hastened, and that the businesse might be expedited in so decent a maner, as a matter of such importance might justly require..."

The English crown had been at odds with the Pope and the Catholic religion for a long time. And as the translators also mention in the Preface, that their humble work was intended to bring light to the Scriptures which they felt the Pope wanted to keep the people in "ignorance and darkness."

"...because we are poore Instruments to make GODS holy Trueth to be yet more and more knowen unto the people, whom they desire still to keepe in ignorance and darknesse...".

So, the King James Version Bible was all about the English king wanting to create a "better, reader-friendly English-language Bible" than anything at that time, that would allow for a greater understanding of God's Word by the people.

Is Moody Bible Institute a King James only school?

No, it's interdenominational so that could cause a conflict. When I graduated from Moody Bible Institute in the late 60s the King James Bible was used in all Bible study and theology classes and all Bible memory verses were to be from the King James Bible. However, I think today that they have gone to a modern Bible which is supposed to be "better", but in reality waters down God's Word to make it more pleasing to all people. I wish they would have stuck with the King James Bible.
