Kingston-on-Murray is so named because it is the town of Kingston on the Murray River, Australia's largest and most significant river. In the days of the paddlesteamers, the Murray River was an important waterway for ferrying goods and people between ports in South Australia and in southern New South Wales and northern Victoria. Kingston-on-Murray was one of eleven communal settlements, known as village settlements, established as a result of the Crown Lands Amendment Act in 1893.
