Latin prayer would literally be prayers that are said, written or recorded in the Latin language. In Catholicism, there is the "Latin Rite" which refers to a whole tradition with customs for prayers, celebrations, procedures, laws and rituals as carried out and preserved in those countries directly around and west of Rome. Latin prayers have become synonymous of late with the "Traditional Movement" within the Church, as there are those that contend that the post-Vatican II movement of translating the deposit contained in Latin right into the vernacular for each nation and tongue has loosed massive inaccuracies that are now being perpetuated. The contention is quite well founded, as the modern movement of the Church has not only shed the Latin language in practice, but has significantly altered the rites and prayers once preserved in that universal language. As a result, "Latin prayer" is now used to describe those people and things that remain with the old traditions of the Church, still expressed in Latin, that the modern movement has altered or dismissed.
