Medieval carpentry went through many changes in the medieval period.

15th century: tools became more like today's tools.

Different jobs in carpentry had different social status.

The art/craft of making and constructing objects out of wood : I am researching this question for my PhD. I believe carpentry started in England about AD 1180 in the South East. I have plenty of evidence for this. I am researching dendro dated buildings in Hampshire from c1180 to 1530 (about 105 buildings in all). Though there are many more houses in Hampshire, I am only interested in dendro dated buildings. The earliest vernacular house so far is 1280, but there are earlier buildings. Please feel free to visit my website www.medievalarchitecture.net to find out more. : Richard
