Marathon is a plain 26 miles north of Athens. It was the site of a battle in 490 BCE where Athens with it's ally Plataia turned back a Persian punitive force sent to punish it for its part in burning down the Persian provincial capital in Asia Minor.
After this battle, the Athenian army was warned that the Persian cavalry was being transported by sea to attack Athens in their absence. The 9,000Athenian armoured warriors ran back the 26 miles to Athens to arrive just in time to forestall the capture of their city.
This run is commemorated today with the marathon foot race, except that today's tough runners don't have to do it carrying armour and weapons and in sandals.
