#2 Issik Kul, Kyrgyzstan Issyk Kul is Kyrgyzstan 's largest Lake and at about 180 km long by 70 km wide and 668 meters deep at the deepest point, (the average depth is about 300 meters ), it is the world's second largest mountain lake – and the fifth deepest lake in the world. North America, Yellowstone Lake, located in Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park, is the largest lake at high elevation (ie, more than 7,000 ft.) in North America at 7,735 feet (2358 meters) above sea level. Bolivia, Lake Titicaca. At 3,810 m (12,500 ft) above sea level, it is the highest commercially navigable body of water in the world. With a surface area of 9,064 km2 (3,500 sq mi), it is larger than Puerto Rico and is South America's largest lake. Lake Titicaca is also deep, about 370 m (1,214 ft) at its deepest, but with an average depth of 215 m (705 ft); its volume of water is large enough to maintain a constant temperature of 10 °C (50 °F).

The largest 'alpine' lake is not Lake Tahoe. Alpine, per Wikipedia January 2014 is: "Alpine lakes are classified as lakes or reservoirs at high altitudes, usually starting around 5,000 feet (1524 metres) in elevation above sea level or above the tree line." Geologically 'Alpine' lakes are high elevation lakes in a glacially altered limestone/marble environment. Lake Tahoe has a surface area of 191 square miles per Wikipedia 1/14. But geologically, the deposits around Tahoe are volcanic and the products of erosion of volcanic/igneous deposits, not limestone/marble. Also the lake is not a product of glacial action, but instead the result of faulting: See http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/ltbmu/learning/?cid=stelprdb5109570 and http://geology.Utah.gov/maps/geomap/postcards/pdf/utgeo_postcd.pdf

Even ignoring the geological elements which should entirely disqualify Tahoe from the list of 'large alpine lakes', Tahoe is not the largest alpine lake in North America, although it is marketed as such. I suspect Yellowstone Lake is a better candidate.
