Old Parliament House is now the home of the new Museum of Australian Democracy. However, it will always be Old Parliament House (or Provisional Parliament House as it was called when it opened in 1927, in acknwledgement that it would only be a temporary home for the parliament). The building is still the first purpose-built home of Australia's national parliament and is acknowledged on Australia's national heritage list, and its values are safeguarded through a comprehensive Heritage Management Plan. Its heritage values and the aims of the new museum have been reconciled through the new Interpretation plan, which provides the intellectual framework for integrating the heritage values with the aims of the new museum. While the Museum (which was launched in May 2009) has a number of new displays and uses cutting edge technology to tell the story of Australia's democracy, it still enables visitors to experience the ambience and sense of place of this fine architectural gem.

In May 1927, Australia's Parliament moved into the Parliament House in Canberra for the first time. However, Melbourne was not the nation's capital. On 9 May 1927, Parliament moved to the new national capital at Canberra, where it met in what is now called Old Parliament House (the new Parliament House having been finished in 1988).

Old Parliament House was home to Australia's federal Parliament from?

1927 - 1988. On 9 May 1927, Parliament moved from Melbourne's Exhibition Building (which it borrowed from the parliament of the state of Victoria) to the new national capital at Canberra, where it met in what is now called Old Parliament House. Intended to be temporary, this building actually housed the Parliament until 1988. The new building was finally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 9 May 1988, the anniversary of the opening of both the first Federal Parliament in Melbourne (9 May 1901 - and no, Melbourne was never the capital of Australia), and of the Provisional Parliament House in Canberra (9 May 1927).

Was Parliament house always in Canberra?

Parliament House has only ever been in Canberra, but Parliament has not only ever met in Canberra. At Federation, on 1 January 1901, Canberra did not exist as a city or even a town, and it was only surveyed in 1913. The first Australian Parliament following Federation of the states met on 9 May 1901 in the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne. From 1901 to 1927, Parliament met in Parliament House, Melbourne, which it borrowed from the parliament of the state of Victoria, which in turn sat in the Exhibition Building. On 9 May 1927, Parliament moved to the new national capital at Canberra, where it met in what is now called Old Parliament House.

When was the Australian Parliament House in Canberra built?

This depends on which Parliament House is meant. The first Australian Parliament following Federation of the states met in Parliament House, Melbourne, which it borrowed from the parliament of the state of Victoria, which in turn sat in the Exhibition Building. Construction of the first Parliament House in Canberra, which was only ever intended to be temporary, began in August 1923 and the building was officially opened on 9 May 1927. Intended to be temporary, this building actually housed the Parliament until 1988. Construction of the New Parliament House began in 1981, and the House was finally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 9 May 1988, the anniversary of the opening of both the first Federal Parliament in Melbourne (9 May 1901), and of the Provisional Parliament House in Canberra (9 May 1927).
