Barack Obama is an American politician. He was an Illinois state senator and then a US senator before he was elected president. But if you are asking what his business was before he became a politician, he was not a businessman; he was a lawyer and an advocate for the poor. (Interestingly, his wife Michelle, also a lawyer, became a professional fundraiser in Chicago before her husband was president, and by all accounts, she was a very successful hospital administrator and businesswoman.)

Mr. Obama's background is mainly in law, education, and advocacy. He does not have a business background per se, but as an attorney, he did represent a number of business clients. He also worked closely with the business community when he was a member of the Illinois state legislature.
