A "ramdisk" is a storage device that is set up on top of RAM, hence the term. Because it's sitting on top of RAM, anything stored on a ramdisk is faster than if you would have used a mechanical hard disk. However, because RAM is limited, you will not be able to use a lot of it at once.

The full size of your RAM is unchanged, it's just that now 5 GB is being used as a program called "ramdisk" Check for "free" RAM to see the decrease.

What type of software is RAMDisk?

RAMDisk is a software that is available for purchase for both personal use and commercial use. This software is useful for improving internet page loading times, lowering compile times, speeding up databases and disk-to-disk activities, and more. It basically provides your computer with a virtual block of memory.

Does the backup operation need to be performed on the RAM?

No. Unless if you are using something like a ramdisk, then there will be no need as the data you put on it is not necessarily important and will be cleared within minutes of power cut-off.

Will Microsoft come up with a version of Windows that loads into memory during boot so you run off a ramdisk?

Nobody knows what Microsoft will do. However there is something called a Live CD. When a Live CD is booted.it loads into and runs in memory without involving the hard drive.

How do you exclude a directory from a ramdisk?

Walkthrough: Create a Bootable Windows PE RAM Disk on CD-ROMThis walkthrough describes how you can create a bootable Windows PE RAM disk on CD-ROM by using the Copype.cmd script. Windows PE RAM enables you to start a computer for the purposes of deployment and recovery. Windows PE RAM boots directly into memory, enabling you to remove the Windows PE media after the computer boots.

Why does virus appears in PC even after formatting it?

If a virus persists on a PC even after formatting it is likely that the virus has been inserted into the boot sector of the hard drive - which is not rewritten when you re-format it. Assuming you are running a Microsoft OS, to fix it, boot using the install CD for the OS and run the first Repair option which will load the Recovery Console from a ramdisk (and doesn't use the hard drive for booting). This requires that your BIOS supports booting from the CD drive. Then run the 'fixboot' command. This is supposed to overwrite the boot sector. You may have to specify the drive letter of which partition to fix.

How many partitions minimum does Linux require?

It should have the same limitations as any other operating system if you solely work with physical volumes - 4 primary partitions on MBR, unlimited on GPT (though Windows will limit it to 128). Otherwise, if you use something like LVM, it would be unlimited logical partitions, across a single disk or multiple disks.

Where is the network drive located?

The network drive can be any number of places: it can be a shared drive on a workstation (such as in a peer-to-peer network as Windows uses), a file server (in a more traditional client-server network configuration as most Linux/Unix networks use), a network-attached storage (NAS) device, or even a RAMdisk on a computer located on the network (though this is uncommon nowadays). If you are talking about something that has read-only access, it could even be an optical drive of some sort located on a computer or a "jukebox" of multiple optical discs hung off the network in some location. As for the physical location of a network drive, it can be anywhere that is accessible from the network in question. Just because you can use it does not mean that it is sitting in the same room as you. It could be elsewhere on the same floor, in a different building, or even across the city/state/country from you with your only clue to its distance from you possibly being the amount of time it takes to get it to respond to your requests.I hope this helps. How can you play Minecraft with no lag?

Try closing other programs to free up RAM. RAM is the main influence of how minecraft runs. It is recommended that you have at least 3GB of RAM on a 64-bit computer. You can also try turning the render distance down by press ESC and then going to options > video settings and then clicking on render distance until it gets to short or tiny, which ever works for you best. You could also put your minecraft worlds onto a Partition on the RAM to make them load quicker using a program called RAMDisk then create a symbolic link between the two folders (.minecraft saves and the RAM partition) using some command prompt. Running a server then playing off the server makes minecraft work a little better. Just open the server file and then in the minecraft ip box for multiplayer type in your computer's name (EG Chris-PC or John-PC) where 'Chris' and 'John' is you would put your computers username

What is the kernel file normally named?

It varies from system to system, based on what the distributors call it and if you run a custom kernel or not, but the file will usually at least have vmlinuz as part of the name. This means it runs on its own virtual machine and is compressed. Also, there will likely be a ramdisk image accompanying the kernel that will contain necessary drivers and configuration files for the kernel to be able to read and run what's on your hard disk. Remember that the kernel file is an IMAGE, not an executable binary. That means its meant to basically be copied straight into memory unmodified and manipulated from there before execution. You, the user will not be able to modify it very easily. IF your goal is a custom kernel, then get the source code for the kernel, introduce your patches, do your configuration, and build it. If your goal is in seeing what the kernel is "thinking" at any point in time, you'd be best looking at the contents of the /proc and /sys directories, which give you a peek into the innards of the systems current operation, as they are virtual filesystems that base themselves off of the current state of the kernel. You can also normally grab your current kernel's configuration by copying out /proc/config.gz and decompressing it. It will be a plaintext file you can read and write.
