Strontium serves no purpose in nuclear power plants. It is, however, a by-product of the fission of U-235, which is the reaction that produces power in a nuclear power plant.
Drywall made in China was reported in early 2009 to have trace amounts of strontium sulfide in it. This strontium sulfide is most likely a contaminant of the gypsum used in the making of the drywall.
