"STD code" is an alternative name for an "area code" in the United Kingdom and several other countries. It comes from the phrase "Subscriber Trunk Dialling."

A 5-digit STD code is simply an area code in the UK that has 5 digits. The 0 is not included as a part of the area code. The 0 is dialled within the UK to signify a long-distance call. The 0 is not dialled on a call from abroad.

There are only 12 such area codes.

013873 - Langholm 015242 - Hornby-with-Farleton 015394 - Hawkshead 015395 - Grange-over-Sands 015396 - Sedbergh 016973 - Wigton 016974 - Raughton Head 016977 - Brampton 017683 - Appleby-in-Westmorland 017684 - Pooley Bridge 017687 - Keswick 019467 - Gosforth

Note that India also uses the term "STD Code" for its domestic telephone area codes, and India has many STD codes that are 5 digits or longer.
