A macro is a small program designed to do a task. It is useful for doing repetitive tasks. If you start recording a macro, it will remember everything you do within a program. Once you stop recording. it stops remembering, but still stores this previous info. When the macro is played, it will repeat everything you did while you were recording the macro. So a macro is basically a repeater. You can save the marcro and use it again regularly. It may be for some task that you do quite often, that is always done the same way and has a lot of steps. Instead of doing them one by one every time you need to do the task, the steps can be saved in a macro.

Macros can be written directly with programming code, using the language called Visual BASIC for Applications, which is referred to as VBA. It is similar to but not the exact same as Visual BASIC. By using VBA you can do more sophisticated and powerful macros.

A Macro is a small program which is typed into a Macro File. In Excel click Help on the toolbar then type "Macro". This will tell you what they are, what they do and how to create them. They are very useful. You can also on the toolbar click on "Tools" then "Macros" to see what is there.
