A Peltier diode is a thermoelectric device that uses the Peltier effect to transport heat between the junction of two different types of materials. A Peltier cooler, heater, or thermoelectric heat pump is a solid-state active heat pump which transfers heat from one side of the device to the other, with consumption of electrical energy, depending on the direction of the current applied.

It can be thought of as a type of thermocouple operated in reverse (a thermocouple generates an electric current from heat, a Peltier device transports heat when driven by an electric current).
