The Slavic Church is a branch of the Catholic Church begun by the evangelization efforts of St. Methodius and St. Cyril, who first brought Christianity to the Slavs. St. Cyril created an alphabet (which is still used and bears his name - the Cyrillic alphabet) for the languages of the Slavs, since they did not at that time have a written language, and translated The Bible and other texts into this new written form for their benefit. The Slavic Church has traditionally had a strong role in the Universal Church, contributing several major saints and Ven. Pope John Paul II from Poland.
Slavic churches also traditionally have their own Eastern European architectural flair, marked by onion domes and other very distinctive features. Wawel Cathedral in Kraków is a good example of this style.
