GAR (Grand Army of the Republic); VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars); AM LEGION (American Legion founded by WWI vets); AMVETS (American Veterans founded by WWII Vets); and the VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America founded by Viet War vets) are Veteran's groups.
War Veterans.
The "American Legion" was created by WWI veterans in about 1919. The "Veterans of Foreign Wars" (VFW) was created by Spanish-American Veterans of 1898, and is our oldest Veterans group. The "American Veterans" (AMVETS) was created by WWII veterans. Originally, these veteran groups were open to only their own veterans, but as time went by they opened to all "qualified" veterans.
Unemployed veterans
GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) was the US veteran's group in those days. These were Union Civil War veterans (US Army/US Navy/US Marine; aka Federal or Yankees).

The American Veterans Aid Group is believed to be a scam, according to the opinions of many people. The organization is not sanctioned by any veterans organizations.
I am not sure that as a group they do.
One of the major veteran's group that was active in politics after 1865 was the Grand Army of the Republic. Because of its lobby, veterans homes were created. This eventually led to the creation of the Veterans Administration.
The Spanish-American War of 1898 was the first "Foreign" war fought on foreign soil by US forces. In 1899 veterans of that war formed the "Veterans of FOREIGN Wars" to protect themselves from political moves that would/could short change veterans and associated benefits. The first established military veterans group had been GAR (Grand Army of the Republic), which consisted of (Union) US Civil War veterans; they died out when the last Civil War (GAR member) veteran passed on. Each veterans group is normally created to protect the benefits of that particular veterans "group"; as the years go by, politicians perform budget cuts...which often effects veterans. The "American Legion" was formed by WW1 vets; AMVETs (American Veterans) was formed by WW2 vets. The most unique veterans group was the VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America); this group was (often) NOT allowed to join established veterans organizations during the 1960's; so they formed their own group in about 1978. The VVA's motto, is "they will never turn their back on another veteran."
