The word wyoming derives from the Munsee Delaware (Lenape) words xwé:wamənk (MECHEWEAMI-ING). To the Indians it meant "at the big plains," or "on the great plain," or "at the big river flat," or "mountains and valleys alternating".

The Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, the city of Wyoming, Michigan, the US state of Wyoming, and other places were named for xwé:wamənk (MECHEWEAMI-ING).
