It's a big cat, so it hunts for it's food. It frequents the African plains, It's also the worlds fastest land mammal. So it chases it's food, Antelope and the likes. Another thing is it is the only member of the cat family that CANNOT withdraw it's claws

Cheetahs hunt by chasing down their prey therefore they require open plains. Interesting to not that during the last ice age the only open plains in Africa was a very small area at the southern most tip. The cheetah population had to have been very small and all cheetah living today are closely related.
