"Besides she liked being lonesome for a change. This freedom ...
feeling was fine. These men didn't represent a thing she wanted to know about. She had already experienced them through Logan and Joe. She felt like slapping some of them for sitting around grinning at her like a pack of chessy
cats, trying to make out they looked like love." (9.7)
Thought: Having experienced horrible failed marriages with Logan and Joe, Janie enjoys her single status for the first time in a long time. Now she knows what she wants out of a man and she definitely knows what she doesn't want - pretense of love. Now that Janie has learned what love is not, she will soon learn what it is.
In "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, a "chessy cat" is a term used by the character Pheoby to describe someone who is sly and cunning, like a cat playing Chess strategically. It signifies a person who is manipulative or deceitful in their actions.

simile & adjective
When Ponyboy says that Two-Bit is "grinning like a Chessy cat", he is comparing him to the character of the Cheshire Cat from the Lewis Carroll story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The Cheshire Cat is a feline with the magical ability to become invisible except for his toothy smile; oftentimes in the tale, the large grin is all that can be seen of him. Two-bit, who has just played a prank on Ponyboy and Johnny by impersonating a threatening Soc, is grinning from ear to ear, and his demeanor reminds Ponyboy of the famous cat from Wonderland. Ponyboy's use of the allusion and while mispronouncing the term (Cheshire/Chessy) illustrates through marvelous juxtaposition the two opposing and seemingly contradictory sides of his nature. Ponyboy is a tough, unrefined member of the Greasers from the wrong side of the tracks, but at the same time he is highly intelligent, studious, and well-read. Hope this helps (:The Chesire Cat from the children's tale Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The cat is famous for its wide and sometimes creepy grin.
a metaphor, allusion and an overstatement i hope that helped :)
