The vent is the "hole" where they defecate out of.
Well, I am currently raising 6 chicks. And I have to say, They poop a lot more then I expected. They are almost 3 weeks old and they seem to eat more and more everyday! We clean their pen once a week and our pen is 4 feet by 4 feet. They often sit in their food and poop in it. Just try to keep the chicks environment as clean as possible. If they spill their water, make sure you replace the wet bedding with dry bedding. Because a wet chick is more prone to disease. A clean chick is a healthy chick. Also, keep in mind when raising chicks, for their first week of life you need to make sure their vents are clean. (A vent is where they poop.) Often times their poop will build up causing them to not be able to poop anymore. Chicks will die from this if this is not properly cared for. If you do find that your chick's vent has some build up, you need to clean their vent by a wet papertowel. If this doesnt work, then you can dip their rear in a little warm water. Just be careful, chicks will drown.
All chicks look alike so you can't tell males from females just by looking at them. You have to "sex" them individually in order to separate the males from the females. There are people who are specially trained to do this in a matter of seconds by gently squeezing the chick which opens up the vent and allows them to see the gender of the chick.
Cochin chickens cannot be sexed based on their feathers like some other birds. Only two ways to tell, one is by waiting until they are about a month old and the cockerels start to form wattles or by vent sexing them. I do not suggest the vent sexing method unless you have someone who is experienced in the field helping you. It is difficult to tell the difference to an untrained eye. However if you are set on trying it, remember that it needs to be done quickly as the chicks can get ill from infections. Also the vent sexing method does put a fair amount of stress on them. All in all, my suggestion is to wait.
