A church donation, simply speaking, is a gift of money you give to a local church community. Often this is amount is separate from "tithe." Tithing is when Christians give the first 10% of their income to the church, usually on a weekly basis.

Donations can occur at any time or for any reason, but are generally contributions given to some project (i.e. helping orphans in Uganda). Churches are almost always 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, thus both tithes and donations are tax deductible.

A tithe is a offering one makes to the church. It is generally understood to be ten percent of your income that you give as a tithe.

Do you give a donation for a luncheon provided for funeral service attendees by the Church?

The church might tell you what the expected donation is if a funeral luncheon is provided by the parish/church community. In the case of my mother-in-law, we were told $5 per person. For 75 people, this was $350, but we rounded up to $500 since we could afford it, and my in-laws were devout parishioners.
