Dial-up is used on telephone lines. It is the slowest type of connection. Cable modems are high speed connections that travel over cable TV systems. Then there is DSL (Direct Satellite Link). DSL is also high speed but a satellite dish is needed to connect. So any of these methods are needed for a network to connect to the internet.
