inspect the printing on cables and throw away anything labeled "cat-3" and keep the stuff which says "cat-5e" or "cat 6" inspect all cable terminations while you're looking at them.
in troubleshooting, you can use the command "ping" in windows, mac osx and Linux, so get to a command prompt and type:
(windows users can type "ipconfig" to get this info. Linux user can type "ifconfig"
ping 127.0.0.1
if you get a reply your computers' ip stack is ok. if you don't get a reply the computer needs work.
now type:
ping (your local ip address: IE 192.168.x.x)
if you get a reply your network card is ok.
now type:
ping (your gateway [aka router] ip address: IE 192.168.0.1)
if you get a reply your computer is able to talk to the device which interfaces with the outside world. yay!
now:
ping (ip address of something in the outside world.. Yahoo is 98.137.149.56)
if you get a reply your router is talking to the outside world
there's only one thing left it's likely to be: if you can ping yahoo's ip address, but not ping yahoo.com itself, it's a DNS problem! so now, type:
ping yahoo.com
if you get a reply you have a good local ip stack, a good interface, a link to the router, the router is routing and DNS is resolving. yay!

∙ 11y agoThere's quite a few reasons one of these guys can fail.
First and foremost, all computer parts are only as good as their weakest transistor, capacitor, etc. It very well could be that the card got warm and fried, or it could have simply had a component fry due to old age and use.
More obscure causes could be driver issues (Drivers corrupt, accidental deletion, accidental partial deletion, etc), partial motherboard failure (If it is plugged into a PCI, AGP, of PCI-e slot), partial controller failure (If it is plugged into a USB port or hub), or just "one of those things." I would try to have the Network Interface Card tested, either by a 3rd party or by yourself on another computer if possible. They aren't pricey, so a new one is a possibility, too.
