Communication can be categorized into formal and informal communication. The three types of formal communication are horizontal communication, upward communication and downward communication.
As a technical and scientific communicator for over 30 years, I have learned that what costs perhaps billions of dollars in inefficient communication is the assumptions people make. Each person has their own meaning of scietific or business terms. When coming together on agreements, the facilitator has to develop a sensitivity to semantics and the assumptions people make. In the process of challenging them, everyone can get on the same page through dialogue and aggrement of semantics. Generally, it is a matter of converting implicit language to explicit language. Without this process, the cost in labor and materials is substantial and immeasurable.
