"A peripheral is a device attached to a host computer behind the chipset whose primary functionality is dependent upon the host, and can therefore be considered as expanding the hosts capabilities, while not forming part of the system's core architecture." - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripheral

Is usb cable or an Ethernet cable an example of a term peripheral as used in IT and computer science?

Unfortunately not, a periphal is anything that can be connected to the outside of a computer, but does not become part of the computer... an example for a peripheral would be: USB, bluetooth adapter, wireless internet adapter, keyboard and mouse... ect. The USB cable would be classed as a data cable, and the ethernet as a networking cable.

What is the name of the first commercially available electronic digital computer not by IBM?

Actually any commercial computer by anybody that could be named was before IBM. Watson Sr. saw little future in electronic computing and did not want to build fast machines that would obsolete their Electromechanical Unit Record line. It took Watson Jr. and the Korean War to push IBM into making their first "commercial" compuuter: the Scientific IBM 701. Their first two true commercial computers: The IBM 650 and IBM 702 were introduced a year or two after the IBM 701.

Why is Express card 54 slot used?

It is an expansion slot intended for the addition of external periphal devices (kind of like the slots found internally in the computer for hard-drives or other hardware devices or sound/video cards). USB and firewire have been a more popular way for people to add external devices becasue many devices do not require high bandwidth- external hard drives or flashdrives connected via USB may have slow transfer rates when compared to that of an ExpressCard , however, the speed is not necessarily a big deal because external hard drives are not meant to be continuously accessed but are used primarily for portible/backup storage. A USB port, however, would not be ideal for certain applications such as high bandwidth internet connections or sound cards. ExpressCards are meant to be the new standard that replaces the PC/PCMCIA cards. It is faster and more compact than the traditional PC Cards. They have fast data transfer rates, so they are ideal for TV tuners, ethernet adapters, sound cards, external drives, etc. It's much faster than the PC Card because it directly connects to the system bus via PCI Express and USB 2.0.
