What Is Coronary Heart disease? Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the UK's biggest killer, with one in every four men and one in every six women dying from the disease. In the UK, approximately 300,000 people have a heart attack each year. CHD is a condition in which plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries. These arteries supply your heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood. Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. When plaque builds up in the arteries, the condition is called atherosclerosis. There are different names for coronary heart disease some of these names are: Atherosclerosis Coronary artery disease Hardening of the arteries Heart disease Ischemic heart disease Narrowing of the arteries Symptoms Some symptoms of coronary heart disease are Angina is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when an area of your heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina may feel like squeezing in your chest. The pain also may occur in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. It can feel like indigestion. Emotional stress might also trigger this pain. Shortness of breath. This symptom happens if CHD causes heart failure. When you have heart failure, your heart can't pump enough blood throughout your body. Fluid builds up in your lungs, making it hard to breathe which can cause death. Dizziness, light-headedness, or fainting. Dizziness could also be caused by CHD. If you start to feel dizzy or light headed for no apparent reason or if you feel dizzy with the other symptoms, contact a doctor immediatley.

Coronary Artery disease typically occurs when the diameter of the artery shrinks due to the buildup of plaque. Usually due to a high cholesterol level in the blood. As the artery shrinks in diameter, the amount of blood getting through becomes less and less. This can cause angina or a heart attack if the artery is not widened again.
