Best Answer

Articulated knuckle boom cranes are just as the name implies. They have 2-3 pivots (depending on type, brand, etc) that allow the boom to bend. Knuckle boom cranes use the boom to pick and place, as opposed to "stiff boom" cranes, that use the boom as a fulcrum and a rope style winch that does the lifting.

Knuckle boom cranes are to be respected and proper training is essential and at the Crane Instructor we can help train your operators to become very skilled on all knuckle boom cranes that lift LESS than 15, 000 pounds in Alberta.

What is the major difference between a friction crane and a hydraulic crane?

A friction crane is an older model like an American 9210 who's boom controls are gear/ clutch driven. Engaging the clutch and throwing the gears requires a very stout frame and they typically have much stiffer booms and can tolerate a lot more abuse.... They are good for rough lifting operations like pulling pile or pile driving. Hydraulic cranes are there modern counterparts who's boom is controlled by hydraulic pistons which have a much lighter, more delicate touch to the controls and are much better in "heavy lift" operations where you need precision movement.

What is the amusement ride based in part on a rotating crane boom its Italian methinks ride is an extreme ride and is engineered much like a crane with struts and longerons on the boom bulkheads etc h?

The Ride is known as the Booster. The structure is very similar to a Crane Boom and indeed Crane technology was used in its design. I heard fronm operators that she is rated for a maximum (Line Speed) of 70 M/P/H/ simlar to a hammerhead crane. The ride was featured a the Meadowlands State Fair in 2004 and probably mnor recently. How do calculate working radius of a crane?

calculate radius of crane: The radius is always measured from the centre of rotation and is the radius measured after the boom deflects forward when under load.
