The deadman that I have had experience with are for two things
1) a t shaped fixture from 2x4s that act like a wedge support in hang drywall
2) a support header created for the use of retrofitting a beam into existing masonry walls that are receiving things like a new garage door opening etc. one method is removing one or two blocks along the opening and shoving a beam through it and putting in a few jacks or columns to support the load..... but I DO NOT USE THAT METHOD..
I usually install the beam in two parts, one from the inside and one from the outside..demolition consist of removing the face of the block only leaving the outside skin intact...then we install a 4" wide concrete lintel and allow to cure a day or so.... then remove the exterior skin and install either one or two more dependent on wall thickness
