The diseases of the Endocrine are quite numerous. Endocrine glands secrete hormones vital to the function of the body. There are a number of endocrine organs. I'll list them and an abbreviated list of the hormones since there are many secondary hormones that are so tiny in amount or are too complex it would be confusing.

1) Pituitary gland- 12 hormones affecting growth, function of other glands, & sexual function. It's so important it's the ONLY gland enclosed in bone.

2) Thyroid Gland - 5 hormones affecting metabolism & growth

3) Parathyroid Glands - 1 hormone affecting calcium (more important than you think!)

4) Pineal gland- 1 primary hormone affecting body rhythms i.e. sleep.

5) Adrenal Glands - adrenalin [also called epinephrine] vital to the fight-or flight response, cortisol, nor-epinephrine, & aldosterone

6) Pancreas - the only gland that's both and endocrine[ductless] & and exocrine gland [has a duct to release hormones]. Secretes 2 hormones regulating blood sugar

7) Ovaries [women] - estrogen & progesterone- regulates menstrual cycles, secondary sex (female])characteristics,

8) Testes [males] - testosterone: responsible for secondary male characteristics. Also thought to be responsible for increased violence, anger and impulse control .

Other organs that secrete hormones from isolated cell clusters are the stomach (gastrin & secretin mostly), hypothalamus (which stores 2 hormones from the pituitary and then releases them as needed), heart, (atrial natriuetic peptide), placenta ( estrogen, progesterone & testosterone), kidneys (erythropoetin & renin) skin (cholecalciferol) and fat or adipose tissue (leptin & resistin) & the GI tract (gastin, secretin & about 4 others)

Notice how many vital hormones are secreted by these glands. If even one of the hormones is not secreted in the right amounts some pretty nasty diseases are the result.

If too much growth hormone is release, giantism in children & acromegaly in adults is the result ( a very good reason NOT to take growth hormones just to play sports. If a player's using, over time their head, hands & feet are a dead give-away because theyll get larger over time). If you lack ACTH your entire body can get out of sync & a number of diseases & symptoms such as secondary adrenal insufficiency (which can affect every organ of the body) and Cushing's syndrome.

If the thyroid doesn't produce properly one can get cretinism, Grave's disease & mxyedema, among other problems. If the parathyroid is out of whack one can develop bone-wasting diseases & frequent fractures, tetany (muscles spasm & lock), or even respiratory problems or total failure.

The pineal gland misfiring can lead to excessive sleepiness or inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. The pancreas regulates blood sugar- so failure of the pancreas leads to diabetes. One can destroy the pancreas' ability to work well through diet: drinking soda is possibly the most damaging drink of all since it raises blood sugars sky-high rapidly so the pancreas must work to correct it by secreting insulin. Then the levels drop fast, 'confusing' the organ.

The ovaries must function properly or the female ends up with more or less female characteristics, or an irregular menstrual cycle. The testes function to produce the masculinity and sex drive in men. Some link high levels of testosterone to more aggression, violence & anger in males

The list of diseases caused by malfunction of the glands is so long it would take pages. Glands can be affected by stress, lack of sleep, diseases of the brain (tumor, MS, etc.) diet, infection...many things. If the pituitary gives off the wrong amount of a hormone the gland it affects also malfunctions. It can cascade into numerous problems.

Here's an example: a patient had MS & was treated with high-dose steroids. Some time later the patient developed hypothyroidism, diabetes insipidus (one pours out urine by the liter frequently & can lead to hormone imbalance, dehydration & death if not treated in time.) a rare Heart disease called Prinzmetal's Angina, sleep imbalance and narcolepsy. Over a 6 yr span the patient was treated by numerous specialists at one of the top hospitals.

The patient suffered from the diseases, deteriorating from a strong, basically healthy person with a slightly high BMI who worked full time despite the MS into an obese [BMI 31], bed-ridden person who sometimes couldn't put a thought together, had episodes of sudden unconsciousness, and was badly dehydrated. The patient's family was told to start making funeral arrangements. In the ICU one day the patient suffered a brief code blue - 15 seconds - which they luckily spontaneously came out of without staff intervention.

The next doctor was a diagnostician endocrinologist. He took just 5 minutes to decide the patient suffered from a pituitary dysfunction. After the lab work confirmed his diagnosis the patient was started on hormone replacement. Just 48 hrs on cortisol the patient's symptoms began to abate at a phenomenal rate: not only did the diabetes insipidus stop, their mental fuzziness went away, they were able to get out of bed unaided, walk with a cane and start PT. (physical therapy).

Some staff swore the patient had to have been faking to have recovered so quickly, but the specialist defended the patient & told the staff he was going to give a lecture in a few weeks about the endocrine system - and he suggested they attend. In 2 weeks the patient was almost normal. Six months later they'd shed 32 lbs, was walking without a cane most of the time and was able to return to a normal life.

I hope this answers your question sufficiently. I caution any who read this about self-diagnosing your own conditions. One can develop conditions from many factors. Doctors spend 14 - 19 yrs learning their trade - no other field requires such investment. One key phrase is drummed into all medical staff by every professor: never assume anything. If you're having any symptoms, go to a good doctor. There are several professional ratings sites... or you can make the 1st appointment a meet-and-greet. Truly good docs don't mind sharing their accomplishments, papers, schools attended, etc. Remember, if you don't feel comfortable with a specialist then don't pick them. There must be a certain level of trust for any relationship to work.

There are many but two are damage to the cells of the pancreas that produce insulin that can reduce to amount of insulin causing diabetes. The parathyroid glands produce a hormone that helps to regulated calcium levels. Hypocalcemia often leads to tetany and convulsions.
