The phosphates kept ions like calcium from attaching to your dishes. A good alternative is to pour a few tablespoons of white vinegar in the bottom of your dishwasher prior to starting it. Citric acid is another alternative but it is easier to find the white vinegar.

How much phosphate do you add to dishwasher soap?

From the research I have done, I have discovered that most dishwasher detergents have between 10-25% phosphate. This would mean adding between 1/2 and 1 Tablespoon of trisodium phosphate (TSP) to 1/4 cup of dishwasher detergent. If you are hand-washing your dishes, I would use the lower amount AND wear gloves so as not to damage your skin. TSP is caustic (but not as bad as something like lye). You can also add TSP to laundry detergent at the lower levels, 1/2 tbsp per 1/4 cup of detergent. Search the web for trisodium phosphate, there's about a million other uses!

Why dishwasher leaves film on dishes?

This has become a very common problem. Your dishwasher is not broken. Don't call a repairman or buy a new machine! The white film is probably hard water deposits. This happens because many state governments have banned phosphate as an ingredient in detergent. So detergents don't work as well as before. Here's a solution that's all natural and contains no phosphate.
