The term Doctor of the church is derived from the older meaning of Doctor- meaning Teacher ( as in Indoctrinate, for example) the traditional Four Doctors were- all medieval" Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome, and Gregory- all are addressed spiritually- as Saint. Ambrose and Augustine were Bishops, Jerome a bookish layman- he is patron of Libraries- and is often shown with a tame Lion ( which may have inspired the NYC usage of Lion House for library.) Gregory was a Pope and also gave rise to the Gregorian Calendar and Chant that bears his name.
