A dry cell uses chemicals that are in solid or powder form, as opposed to lead acid batteries that use a liquid electrolyte. The term is generally used to refer to standard non-rechargeable batteries.

In dry cell battery the electrolyte is mixed with silica to hold it in a gel like consistency. In absorbed glass mat batteries the electrolyte is usually held by glass fibers and thus the electrolyte cannot leak or spill over. These are two types of dry cell batteries. In wet cell batteries the electrolyte is in liquid form, comprising a solution of dilute sulphuric acid. As electrolyte dries up it can be replenished in wet cell or flooded cell batteries but it is impossible in sealed gel batteries and difficult in AGM batteries with sealed bodies.

A dry cell has the electrolyte immobilized as a paste, with only enough moisture in the paste to allow current to flow. As opposed to a wet cell, the battery can be operated in any random position, and will not spill its electrolyte if inverted.

While a dry cell's electrolyte is not truly completely free of moisture and must contain some moisture to function, it has the advantage of containing no sloshing liquid that might leak or drip out when inverted or handled roughly, making it highly suitable for small portable electric devices. By comparison, the first wet cells were typically fragile glass containers with lead rods hanging from the open top, and needed careful handling to avoid spillage. An inverted wet cell would leak, while a dry cell would not. Lead-acid batteries would not achieve the safety and portability of the dry cell, until the development of the gel battery.

A common dry cell battery is the zinc-carbon battery, using a cell sometimes called the dry Leclanché cell, with a nominal voltage of 1.5 volts, the same nominal voltage as the alkaline battery (since both use the same zinc-manganese dioxide combination).

The makeup of a standard dry cell is a zinc anode (negative pole), usually in the form of a cylindrical pot, with a carbon cathode (positive pole) in the form of a central rod. The electrolyte is ammonium chloride in the form of a paste next to the zinc anode. The remaining space between the electrolyte and carbon cathode is taken up by a second paste consisting of ammonium chloride and manganese dioxide, the latter acting as a depolarize. In some more modern types of so called 'high power' batteries, the ammonium chloride has been replaced by zinc chloride.

Anywhere lightweight portable power is required and the risks of spilling wet cells would be unacceptable.

Is a AA battery a 12 volt battery?

No, a double "a" battery is a 1.5V battery.No, a double "a" battery is a 1.5V battery.

What does a battery snap do?

A battery snap in electronics is what you connect a battery to. The battery snap then sends the electricity in the battery to the rest of the circuit. It's that simple.

What makes a good battery?

Keeping the fluid topped up with distilled water (acid must cover top of plates to a depth of 5mm or between Max/Min on marks if you have then,DO NOT FILL TO MAX OR OVERFILL, long runs to ensure battery gets fully charged,if not in use remove battery and fully charge, test each cell with a hydrometer to check when all cells are fully charged, don't rely on a volt metre,if you get one cell that shows low charge or dead after 12 hours charge cell is dead, bin battery! don't expose battery to extreme heat or cold for prolonged periods. When you buy a new battery FULLY charge it before use. Dont use your car for short runs too often, that kills batteries. Make sure your charging system is working well, check fan belt tension and condition regulary and check operation of charging sytem with a volt metre. At rest should be about 13v-13.8v when running under full load (Wipers on,heater on,lights on,heated screens on etc) the battery voltage with engine running should not drop below 12v at 1500rpm off load with motor running @ 1500 rpm should be 13.8-14.4v any higher and the charging sytem is faulty and will boil battery dry,if too low, below 12.5V under charging test chargeing system and find fault. These are rough figures and your checking to make sure it doesnt dive to 9v for example when loaded with the engine running,if so battery or alternator are not working propperly and are probably worn out. The regulator on alternators only last about 10 years before they start to die, they can be replaced and come together with a brush set attached to them,so you shouldn't need to buy a new alternator unless the bearings are gone or a winding has failed. That should just about cover how to keep your battery tip top,oh also keep the exterior clean and make sure terminals are always tight/clean (NOT TOO TIGHT),when done up coat terminals with either petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or copper grease (Copper ease) to protect them from corrosion/water.Make sure connections to battery are clean and undamaged, replace any that are corroded/damaged etc. Doing these things will ensure you get the longest life possible from your battery 10-15 years.Best thing in the first place is to avoid buying the cheapest battery possible, spend that bit more for a quality named brand battery with a good warrany,i.e BIG,VARTA,DELTA,BOSCH etc

What is the average current output of a new 1.5 volt drycell AA battery?

The current output is governed by the load resistance of the circuit. The battery will try and supply as much current as needed up until the battery goes dead.

If you solder 9 volt battery to another battery will it explode?

Soldering BatteriesSoldering on the terminals of "drycell" batteries probablywill not cause an explosion, BUT... soldering on any drycell battery WILL DAMAGE the "seal" where the terminals penetrate the battery housing/case. That seal failure will allow leakage of electrolyte which in turn can, and usually does, cause a lot of corrosion and related damage to the batteries themselves, AND adjacent electrical/electronic components! Also, depending on the amount of heat allowed to "sink" into the batteries, the practice of soldering on battery terminals can result in immediate failure of the batteries. Most, if not all, of the terminals of commercially manufactured battery packs are connected using "Spot Welding" which does not create as much damaging heat.
