not all file names have two parts. MacOS - MacOS9 the filenames were one solid line -
macintosh_video_file. The application data was hidden in the resource fork. On Unixes and DOS boxes a file name consists of file name and extension.

The Unix pathname format uses the forward slash (/) to separate the component parts of the path.
Every file (word, PPT, excel etc) have two part Header and data part. if you insert any garbage value in the hexadecimal code of any these two parts file get corrupted. use WinHex (software) to get hexadecimal code of any file and delete some values from it.
There are two parts to this. One, the information in the File Allocation Table, as the file might be spread over different sectors, not all contiguous if your filesystem is fragmented. Two, this would be the specific sectors at which the data resides that make up the contents of the file. Cheers, Chay
