The Great Wall of China was built to defend China from various nomadic groups in the north of Asia who would frequently raid towns and cities. It was first built during the reign of Qin Shi Huang. He was the first emperor of a unified China, coming to power in 221 BC. The majority of the walls we're familiar with were built during the Middle ages by the Ming Dynasty. The wall ceased to be used after China expanded far to it's north.
Manor houses were of two types, those that were fortified and those that were not. Those that were fortified were generally built of stone and looked quite a lot like castles. Those that were not fortified were generally built of timbered construction, but were better built than most houses and the areas between timbers were more likely to be filled with brick than with wattle and daub.
