The Northern railroads were better fit and organized for the war purposes because of their general (with few exceptions) standard gauge, whilst those of the South had many sections built with narrow gauge, which required several transfers to carry out the transportation, with consequent delays and possible damages.

The only downside to rubber tracks is that they can only carry vechilcles up to 30 tons.
Railroads in the west got rights of way for as much as ten miles on either side of the tracks. Towns sprang up where steam locomotives had to stop to get water. In those towns, the railroads built storage silos to accumulate the farmers' crops until a quantity was sufficient to load grain cars in an economical way. If a farmer did not use the railroad silos and the railroad cars, the crops would spoil before they could be transported in any other way to processing plants. There was no alternative, there was no competition. Whatever the railroad charged was the monopoly cost of getting that season's crop to market.
It is generally unsafe to be too close to railroad tracks except at marked crossings and with your full attention for oncoming trains. Do not play around train tracks at all. Standard train tracks do not carry significant power, you would not get electrocuted if you touch either or both rails. A subway train however would fry you promptly. Such was the fate of Mister Green in 'The Taking of Pelham 123.'

The early railroads established "polelines" to carry telegraph wires and electricity alongside the railroad tracks. These looked like what are called telephone poles today, but could have large "crossarms" at the top to carry many wires. These began with just 2 or 4 wires for telegrph use, which later had 2 wires for electricity added. As technology advanced, more wires were added to control trains and send other messages along the lines.
