'Fritz' was the nickname for all German soldiers in WW1. The Bristish were called 'Tommy's' I believe.
'Firebomb Fritz' first appeared on a famous poster of 1941 titled 'Britain Shall not Burn'. The character was used in a series of cartoons designed to inform and reassure the public about the dangers posed by German incendiary bombs.
