Easy: convert data from one size to another.

Example Input to gearbox is 10 bits wide, at a speed of 10 Mhz; output would be 1 bit wide at 100 Mhz.

The question refers to gearboxes, not computers!!

A synchronising, or "synchromesh" gearbox, is one fitted with a mechanism that aligns the gear teeth when changing gear. Without it, on manual transmissions, you would need to perform a move called "double-declutching" to bring the gears somewhere into line and speeds at each gear-change.
