A gerbilarium is an aquarium filled with peat halfway up and chopped straw on top. It is setup so that the gerbils can burrow.

Can a gerbil have an old mouse cage?

Of coarse it can.

How do you set up a gerbilarium?

First, spread bedding throughout the cage. Then, provide a place for them to sleep, like a log. Next, put food and water in the cage. Lastly, put in toys or climbing utensils if you wish. Now you are ready to put in your gerbil and clean the gerbilarium once a week or so.

How big does the cage need to be for one gerbil?

You can choose what to use from: @ An aquarion with a wire or mesh lid (Used for fish) @ A bird cage with a bit of modification (The most expensive usualy) @ A gerbilarium (Basically a hand made thing with a pull out floor to clean and only cleaned every 2-3 months) @ A hamster cage, but these allow and gerbil to flick waste and food through the bars and most of the time aren't big enough.

In Plainfield and Joliet, Illinois, you can find a good selection of gerbilariums at local pet stores such as PetSmart or Petco. Additionally, check out independent pet shops or even online marketplaces like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for more unique or affordable options. It’s also a good idea to visit local animal shelters or rescue organizations, as they may have gerbils available for adoption along with suitable housing.

How much does a gerbil cost?

Gerbils do cost alot as they cannot be placed in any old cage; they need a gerbilarium. These special cages are very costly, they are made of glass so that the gerbils cannot chew through and escape. They need lots of sawdust to cover the floor as they dig; its part of their nature. They can eat alot. They need a partner to live with; they can become very unhappy if left to live on their own and can die of lonelyness. They need lots of hay to build their nests with. Their toys cost more as they are made to be non chewable. But they are very clean animals and hardlyurinate or excrete, which mean they only need to be cleaned every two weeks. Some only need to be cleaned every month!

What are the main gerbil needs?

they are very easy to look after about £20 a month if you spoil them they dont fight they live better in a group and i would get a tank food saw dust bedding straw or hay and some toys Gerbils can be kept even cheaper than £20. Including food, treats, toys and bedding, mine probably cost me about £10 a month at the most. The food and bedding last ages, and toys disappear fast, but you can get loads really cheap. Their main needs are gerbil food, water, bedding (preferably not straw or hay, one is bad for them, although i don't remember which), toilet roll tubes are a must for gerbils! they love them! If you don't have a gerbilarium for them (a tank with a cage on top) then a tank or a cage with a relitively deep bottom is good too. They need enough bedding to be able to dig in, and preferably curl up and sleep in, if your cage isn't deep enough, then something like a coconut shell is a perfect hiding place for them!

Are gerbil good pet?

Yes definitely! Check out this website: http://www.abcgerbils.com/whybest.html

Are girbils good pets?

Yes. Gerbils are very good peat for all ages. They require less time than other pets and they are relatively cheep. Firstly you only have to clean the cage out every 3-4 weeks if it's deep unlike every week for other rodents. Because gerbils originate from the dessert and places like Mongolia, the don't produce a large amount of urine and they don't have to drink much water either. They do need a reasonable amount of food but they don't poo a great amount. After buying the starting things needed mainly the cage the cost is low. The only large cost is the cage depending on the size, prices can range from £20-£100. Things you have to buy on a regular basis is bedding (or use shredded paper) wood shavings (don't use pine or cedar or sawdust, they hurt their eyes and cause respiratory problems) gerbil food, treats, chew toys (can use homemade products). I would also recommend buying a running ball or a wheel to give the gerbils exegesis but it doesn't matter if they don't use it because not all use them. I would also recommend a cage that either has build in tunnels or a series of levels for the gerbils to explore around but beware gerbils can chew through plastic so get either a wire cage or a gerbilarium or a mixture of both which is what I have. Also you should rearrange their toys so they don't get bored.
