Half gallon is miniature! it is cruel to keep a fish in a tank that size. I would definitely recommend getting a new, bigger tank. A 10 gallon would be ideal, fish options could be guppies (even though they breed like crazy) mollies, sword tails or platies.
Community TankI would advise all beginning to start off with community tanks, smaller to medium size peaceful fish. In a community tank you can have several different kinds of fish, more colors, shapes and personalities are great for a beginner! Some beginner community fish for a 30G include;NeonsSwordtailsGuppiesPlatysDwarf GouramiWhite Cloud Mountain MinnowZebra DaniosRasborasCherry BarbsLoachesBe careful not to crowd your tank however, always consult a worker at your local petstore if unsure how many fish is too many for your aquariumCheers,CFalso consider a bottom feeder such as an otocinclus to help maintain the tank.
