A good book about saving animals is Lord of the Kill by Theodore Taylor. This story takes place on a big cat reserve outside of Los Angeles, called Los Coyotes. The married couple who owns the park are away in India on a rugged mission to save tigers from poachers. Their son, who is sixteen, is in charge while they are away. Then the unthinkable happens. A dead body is thrown into the jaguar enclosure in the middle of the night, and the jags eat it. It becomes evident that this is not some dumb coincidence when a sign that badmouths the preserve is place outside the gate, a helicopter scares the cats, and green hands, a sign of Chinese gangs, are found everywhere. It goes from bad to worse when the boys' parents go missing in India and his world is turned upside-down. When his favorite cat, General Dmitri Zukov, is stolen, he's had enough. He goes on a dangerous mission to save his buddy and possibly find out more about his parent's disappearance. This book is realistic fiction.
