Look for a short-scale bass, which has a shorter neck, which is easier for novices or those with small hands.
They're both very different instruments! A knowledge of both instruments will help you learn the other, because they use many of the same prinicples. But id never think of learning one just to edge yourself into the other. Its also worth mentioning that theres a big leap in between what most people think as a good bassist, and a really good bassist (like flea from red hot chilli peppers). it does not matter because if you start on bass you can move on to guitar, but if you start on guitar you can switch to bass (like me) it does not really matter because they both use similar principles

There are many good, light bass guitars. Some good brands include Rees Guitars Lightweight F-Light Bass Guitar and the Yamaha RBX4 A2 Super-Light Electric Bass Guitar.
A good way to start beginning guitar lessons is too get a guitar and a tablature book. The book will show you all the notes and fingerings that are used to play that instrument. After learning the fingerings and notes you can hire an instructor to teach you more.

if you are abeginner and have a budget, a good bass guitar is the epiphone thunder bird which can go for around 300 dollars. if you are an intermediate to advanced, a good bass would be a fender jazz bass or precision bass which have a price range of 500 to 2500 dollars. Preference my favorite bass guitar tough is the Rickenbacker 4003 fireglo which go for about 2500-3000 dollars maybe more

Actually, you can play both bass and guitar on any amplifier. But to produce a better and lower sound for bass, you need a special amplifier for it. I am not sure that there is an amplifier that can play bass and guitar with equal quality.
