As far as I know they airiate the soil so the plants can grow. They are good to have when fishing too. There main purpose, so I have been told, is to help the plant roots to get enouh water and air.

The best type of worms I've used in my garden are earth worms. Mainly night crawlers. They work really well for adding air to the soil. They do tend to multiply quickly. Good Luck.
